eReader market expected to triple in five years

Worldwide shipments of eReaders will nearly triple from the 25 million expected to reach the market this year to 67 million eReaders by 2016.

International Data Corporation (IDC) has initiated a Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker, saying that vendors shipped 4.8 million media tablets globally in 3Q10, compared to 3.3 million units in the second quarter of 2010 and that Apple's iPad accounted for nearly 90 percent of the media tablets shipped worldwide in 3Q10.

Discovery Communications, the owner of the popular Discovery Channel, has filed a patent infringement suit against web titan Amazon.com alleging infringement of a patent for electronic book technology. The suit names the Kindle and Kindle 2 e-book readers and Amazon's e-book delivery system and seeks damages and royalty payments for continued use of the technology.
