The Federal Government has announced the expansion of Australia’s fast charging network for battery electric vehicles (EVs) by providing funding for new chargers across metropolitan and regional Australia to drive uptake of electrtic vehicles (EVs) and support consumer choice. 

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is offering $16.5 million in grants to expand the network of electric vehicle chargers.

Australia’s competition regulator, the ACCC, is proposing to authorise a new consumer code for retailers of products such as solar generation systems, energy storage systems, electrical vehicle charging and other emerging energy products and services.

New Zealand competition regulator, the Commerce Commission, and the Electricity Authority, have initiated a joint project to assess how new technologies and business models emerging in the country’s electricity sector might benefit consumers in the future.

Investment in emerging technologies by New Zealand electricity companies is still relatively small, with most companies to date just focusing on research and development, according to the country’s competition enforcement agency, the Commerce Commission.

New Zealand telco Spark is installing electric vehicle chargers in phone boxes around the city of Wellington as part of the extension of its “Spark Plugs” initiative.
