Microsoft got things seriously wrong when it released Vista and the company knows it. In the past, the absolute market dominance of Windows on the desktop has allowed Redmond to get away with such mistakes. That may no longer be the case now that Google has entered the operating system market with its Linux-based Android platform.

HP Mini 2140 new contender for 10-inch netbook crown

So far I have not heard a bad word about the HP Mini 2140 netbook PC and judging by my experience with its predecessor the 2133 I can understand why. From what I can see, HP's second attempt at a low-end sub-notebook has ironed out the failings of its first try.

Android plus Asus plus Garmin equals Eee Phone

Asus make great netbook computers, Garmin make great GPS portable navigation devices, and Android is proving to be a successful smartphone operating platform based on glowing reviews of the HTC Dream. All this adds up to what promises to be an exciting product slated for later in 2009, the Eee Phone.

When the Eee PC burst on the scene many of us were ready to dismiss it as a cheap consumer toy which would never be suitable for business. No longer. In the cash strapped era of SaaS and the Cloud, netbooks may be just the paradigm shift that enterprises need.

Eee Top - top in touch but top in price, too?

The touch revolution arrived long ago but has been getting refined ever since, and while the iPhone has shown the way, the Eee Top aims to bring touch screens to the masses at a price that’s cheaper than HP’s touch screen computers but still expensive compared to netbooks. Given the Eee Top uses an Atom processor, can we expect similar pricing for touch capable netbooks, too?

OLPC days numbered as recession bites

The One Laptop Per Child organisation (OLPC), looks to have conceded that its "$100 laptop" has been a gigantic lapflop as the global recession bites deeper. Recent reports indicate that OLPC has suffered a massive sales downturn of its XO computer, resulting in equally massive staff layoffs and budget slashing.

Cease and Desist: the netbook war of words

Have you got one of those small, cheap sub-notebooks that have proved so popular thanks to the likes of Acer and ASUS? Better not set up a website about them or the trademark police might track you down.

ASUS created the whole netbook market single-handedly with the ASUS Eee Linux PC. The diminutive portable sold in numbers far beyond expectations catching both ASUS and its competitors by surprise. Fast forward to today and Microsoft have gained the upper hand. In this instance the customer isn't right and by rejecting Linux end users are missing the best experience they could have.

Windows crushing Linux in netbook market: Acer

Contrary to some recent reports, senior managers at Acer and other leading vendors have confirmed that Microsoft Windows XP now dominates the emerging sub-notebook market with more than 90% of new sales. Meanwhile, Linux, which had the netbooks market to itself until April this year, has seen its share of the space eroded to less than 10% in a breath-taking decline.

For a brief moment in time, between October 2007 and April 2008, thanks to the Asus Eee PC it really did seem as if desktop Linux was finally going to have its moment in the sun. Unfortunately for the Linux crowd, however, Asus, Acer and other hardware makers realised they could sell many more netbooks if they did deals with those nasty folks in Redmond.
