Microsoft has relaxed its licensing restrictions on datacentre software to allow for the growing use of virtualisation. Significantly, Microsoft has chosen to drop its previous 90-day reassignment rule, allowing server software to be moved around a server farm as often as necessary. The change is especially significant for customers running virtualised environments.

VMware goes to university, 40 of them

Through the Council of Australian University Directors of Information Technology (CAUDIT) more than 40 universities in Australia and New Zealand have implemented VMware's virtualisation technology.

German company Zimory has launched what it claims to be the world's first online marketplace where organisations can buy and sell processing capacity on their virtualised data centre servers.

Citrix, the newest player to enter the hypervisor space when it acquired XenSource in October 2007, has unveiled “Project Kensho”, designed to make virtual machines portable across the major hypervisor platforms, including XenServer from Citrix, VMware's ESX and Microsoft's recently released Hyper-V.

IBM continues green machine theme

IBM's been pushing better energy efficiency for data centres for a year, and has now introduced a new set of offerings to help its customers meet that goal.

Payroll, retail and accounting software solutions provider, MYOB, has entered the web hosting market with hosting and email packages after the recent purchase of a web hosting business. While this is a good move, it’s clearly still early days, with a hosted MYOB solution to come “in time”.
