The Linux killer 10 inch netbook

The release of the very nice Asus Eee PC 1000HE signals a turning point in the sub-notebook market and it's one that Linux desktop advocates will not like. It looks like the 10 inch netbook has hit the sweet spot for consumers and that sweet spot includes Windows but not Linux.

ASUS has unveiled its new Atom powered Eee PC 1000HE, which boasts up to 9.5 hours battery life. However, at almost A$100 for each hour for us Australians the latest Eee PC model no longer carries the el cheapo netbook price tag that helped make the brand famous worldwide.

Microsoft got things seriously wrong when it released Vista and the company knows it. In the past, the absolute market dominance of Windows on the desktop has allowed Redmond to get away with such mistakes. That may no longer be the case now that Google has entered the operating system market with its Linux-based Android platform.

A news report suggests netbook pioneer Asus has assembled a team to put Google’s Android OS on its popular range of Eee netbook PCs, but as the project is still “in development”, an Android Eee is not guaranteed.

Android plus Asus plus Garmin equals Eee Phone

Asus make great netbook computers, Garmin make great GPS portable navigation devices, and Android is proving to be a successful smartphone operating platform based on glowing reviews of the HTC Dream. All this adds up to what promises to be an exciting product slated for later in 2009, the Eee Phone.

The Pegatron Eee anyone? This week Taiwan "Business Today" magazine broke the news of titanic power struggles between Asustek chairman Johnny Shih and OEM breakaway boss Tung Tsu Hsien, strongly suggesting Hsien will establish his own brand.

Eee Top - top in touch but top in price, too?

The touch revolution arrived long ago but has been getting refined ever since, and while the iPhone has shown the way, the Eee Top aims to bring touch screens to the masses at a price that’s cheaper than HP’s touch screen computers but still expensive compared to netbooks. Given the Eee Top uses an Atom processor, can we expect similar pricing for touch capable netbooks, too?

If you were tempted by Vodafone’s $0 upfront Dell Mini 9 netbook deal with 5GB of mobile broadband at $69.95 per month over 24 months, but haven’t yet taken up the offer, Vodafone has just sliced $10 off the monthly price – and is throwing in three months of free access to boot, making the deal cheaper still. OLPC days numbered as recession bites

The One Laptop Per Child organisation (OLPC), looks to have conceded that its "$100 laptop" has been a gigantic lapflop as the global recession bites deeper. Recent reports indicate that OLPC has suffered a massive sales downturn of its XO computer, resulting in equally massive staff layoffs and budget slashing.

Cease and Desist: the netbook war of words

Have you got one of those small, cheap sub-notebooks that have proved so popular thanks to the likes of Acer and ASUS? Better not set up a website about them or the trademark police might track you down.

ASUS created the whole netbook market single-handedly with the ASUS Eee Linux PC. The diminutive portable sold in numbers far beyond expectations catching both ASUS and its competitors by surprise. Fast forward to today and Microsoft have gained the upper hand. In this instance the customer isn't right and by rejecting Linux end users are missing the best experience they could have.

Netbooks market maker Asus, the champion for the past year of Linux advocates the world over, has confirmed that sales of Eee PC models pre-loaded with Linux have fallen in the wake of availability of Windows XP versions.

Windows crushing Linux in netbook market: Acer

Contrary to some recent reports, senior managers at Acer and other leading vendors have confirmed that Microsoft Windows XP now dominates the emerging sub-notebook market with more than 90% of new sales. Meanwhile, Linux, which had the netbooks market to itself until April this year, has seen its share of the space eroded to less than 10% in a breath-taking decline.

For a brief moment in time, between October 2007 and April 2008, thanks to the Asus Eee PC it really did seem as if desktop Linux was finally going to have its moment in the sun. Unfortunately for the Linux crowd, however, Asus, Acer and other hardware makers realised they could sell many more netbooks if they did deals with those nasty folks in Redmond.
