For the first time in recent memory, the big N decided to opt for a more intimate experience over the traditional blockbuster press conference, using a 45 minute streamed video presentation to quietly showcase some new titles in Los Angeles today.
It was one of many differentiators between the Japanese company and its loud, showy rivals, along with the fact that most if its cool next-generation titles are on the way in 2014, not this year.
This means Nintendo will miss the critical Christmas season, and kids across Australia and the world will receive Xbox Ones and PS4s under their Christmas trees, not new Wii U titles.

Other titles Nintendo talked up for 2014 are the exclusive sequel to critical darling Bayonetta, along with a new open-world adventure franchise called X from the creators of iconic RPG Xenosaga.
There is still some first-party love for gamers coming this year, however. Super Mario 3D Land will receive a Wii U update called Super Mario 3D World in December, and an HD update to The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker will be released in October.
A new Donkey Kong Country 2D side-scroller is on the way too, as well as a new Wii Fit that makes use of a "fit meter" and a new Wii Party game. And there's also an exclusive Sonic game, known as Lost World.
Third party titles got a run in Nintendo's presentation too, namely Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Batman Arkham Origins, Disney Infinity, Just Dance 2014, Rayman Legends, Scribblenauts Unlimited: A DC Comics Adventure, Disney's Planes, Skylanders SWAP Force, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, and Watch Dogs.
Although these will likely have inferior graphics on the Wii U to other, newer consoles, some may make the most of Nintendo's innovative GamePad controller.
So while there's plenty to like, Nintendo was never going to top the likes of Sony or Microsoft this year, so it didn't really attempt to try.
