Tellabs tells of new lab

By

Global telecommunications company Tellabs will open an Innovation Solutions Research Lab in Melbourne, creating 25 jobs in Melbourne over the next three years.

Minister for Information and Communication Technology John Lenders said Tellabs' ability to grow and expand from Victoria was testament to the state's ability to attract major global companies.

'The Brumby Labor Government is standing up for Victorian jobs by working with businesses with operations across the world,' Mr Lenders said.

'International technology leader Tellabs is looking to invest more capital, more jobs and create more economic development in Melbourne, to take advantage of our reputation as the telecommunications hub of Australia.

'By establishing its Innovation Services Research Lab in Melbourne, Tellabs is strengthening its position in the Asia Pacific region and positioning itself as a leader in emerging technologies.''

Since setting up its Australian headquarters in Melbourne in 2006, Tellabs has increased its staff by 300 per cent and become a leading provider to Telstra.

The company's Innovation Services Research Lab will be set up in Aon House in Collins Street, moving from its current smaller headquarters in the Rialto Tower.

'Tellabs is a great example of the continued growth of Victoria's global networks and reinforces the state's reputation as a growing economy with a competitive tax system, one of the most attractive lifestyles in the world and a highly-skilled workforce,' Mr Lenders said.

Tellabs' Australian Managing Director Nick Faulkner said the company was delighted to be expanding its presence in Melbourne.

'Opening the lab in Melbourne is an important step for Tellabs in Australia as it will expand our ability to support and test cutting-edge technology,' Mr Faulkner said.

'With continued major investment into the research and development of our GPON products, we are able to offer a greener technology that uses 70 per cent less power compared with overlay solutions with limitless bandwidth potential.

Tellabs's Global President and CEO Robert W. Pullen said, "We're committed to our investment in Melbourne and aim to continue to grow at the same rate at which we have over the past five years.'

Tellabs Australian headquarters provides telecommunications clients with optical and mobile networking and service layer technologies, advanced R&D, sales and IT services, particularly for next-generation services. Headquartered in Illinois in the United States, Tellabs equipment is deployed in 90 countries, with the company employing more than 3300 people worldwide, with a global turnover of US$1.5 billion in 2009.
