VIDEO INTERVIEW: Appian EVP Engineering, Suvajit Gupta talks low-code trends, developer talent and tech transformations

By

GUEST INTERVIEW: Before Appian was a company, its founders had an idea about the culture needed to sustain innovation and value, and the belief that talented and passionate people, given the power and autonomy to excel, will deliver amazing results. Appian is the result, with its ever-evolving low-code automation platform combining people, technologies, and data in a single workflow to maximise resources and dramatically improve business results, with Suvajit Gupta joining us to discuss, explore and more.

Appian. Founded in 1999, and having moved well beyond low-code alone, Appian's ever-evolving Low-Code Platform accelerates businesses by discovering, designing, and automating their most important processes, combining the key capabilities needed to get work done faster.

These key capabilities comprise of Process Mining, Workflow and Automation, in a unified platform.

Fast forward to the second half of 2022, and while the world at large seems to finally be coming out of the pandemic at long last, financial, logistics and manufacturing challenges remain. Businesses must also grapple with achieving their digital transformation goals, keeping customers happy, dealing with developer shortages and retaining talent.

iTWire first spoke to Appian CEO and co-founder Matt Calkins in two great video interviews, the first in late 2020, and the second in mid-2021, with both exploring the low-code revolution, hyper automation, business and plenty more, with both interviews a great discussion with one of the tech world's most impressive CEOs.

Then, in February this year, we spoke with with Luke Thomas, Appian's Area VP APAC about the addition of no-code Process Mining to the platform, the benefits it offers, the bottlenecks it alleviates and more.

iTWire's latest interview is with Suvajit Gupta, the Executive Vice President of Engineering at Appian, who explained the latest Appian developments, trends in the low-code market, developer talent shortages and much more, and that interview is embedded below.

After that you'll see two more videos embedded, the first of which is a talk Suvajit gave to a Gartner summit last year on how low-code is the jet fuel for application development, and the second a short video on the August release of Appian 22.3, the company's latest platform update, which democratises data modelling and automation so any user can deliver workflows and applications 10x faster without writing a single line of code.

This is the followed with a summary of the topics discussed with Suvajit, so please watch and read on!

Low-code is the Jet Fuel for Application Development - from the Gartner Summit in 2021:

What's new in Appian 22.3:

Here's a summary of the topics spoken about with Suvajit Gupta:

  • I started by introducing Suvajit, noting the previous interviews done with Matt and Luke, and asked him to please remind us of Appian's products, services and capabilities as we record, now well into the second half of 2022.

  • Commenting on how there's more discussion about low-code than ever before, Suvajit explains why it remains so important, and the advances Appian has been delivering to its platform that we needed to know about.

  • Next came Suvajit looking at trends in the low-code market more broadly, following by a discussion on the state of the development market, whether there's enough talent to satisfy demand, what the industry can do to attract and retain developers, and whether local transformation projects are at risk.

  • After this, I asked Suvajit to comment on his thoughts on what is holding better digital transformation back, and what companies and business people don't know that they should.

  • Cybersecurity was my next question and how Appian handles it all, followed by Suvajit's views on how Appian should evolve over the next couple of years.

  • We finished by reminiscing over the first computer Suvajit every used, what got him interested in engineering, great advice received in life, and his final message to viewers and readers, and to Appian's current and future customers and partners.

So, to learn why Appian cracked the code on low-code long ago and why it is an excellent platform you need to know about, please watch the video interview with Appian's EVP of Engineering, Suvajit Gupta above!
