OMGPOP to shut up shop

By

Zynga has said 'pop goes the weasal' to OMGPOP, the developers who made the once-popular social game Draw Something.

The announcement comes courtesy of CNET, who noticed the struggling company quietly announced the closure of OMGPOP and four of its games last week in its player support forum.

Draw Something, Draw Something 2 and Draw My Thing will continue to live on under Zynga, however support for Cupcake Corner, Gem Rush, Pool World Champ, and Snoops will be ending on 29 August.

Zynga laid off the OMGPOP team in June, after buying the company for US$210 million last year. Draw Something has since plummeted in popularity however, as has Zynga's own properties including Words with Friends and Farmvile.

Zynga gained a new CEO, Microsoft's Don Mattrick, back in July as the company seeks to reverse its plummeting share price and pull back gamers who have lost interest in the company.

The news also comes as Zynga announced last week it was taking on Facebook app Banging with Friends, claiming trademark infringement.
