Mitel founder Terry Matthews' video play
Canadian IP telephony systems developer, Mitel Networks Corporation is gearing up for an initial public offering.
The company has filed a registration statement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission and a preliminary prospectus with securities regulators in all of the provinces and territories in Canada. Morgan Stanley and RBC Capital Markets are joint book runners for the offering. The underwriting syndicate also includes Merrill Lynch, Genuity Capital Markets, Thomas Weisel Partners and National Bank Financial.
Mitel is largely owned by its founder, serial Welsh entrepreneur Sir Terrence Matthews. He founded the company in the early seventies to exploit the new technology of microprocessor-controlled PABXes, and did so very successfully. He sold Mitel to BT in 1984 when the big players caught up; only to buy the business back in 2000 and invest massively in R&D to catch the IP telephony wave. In between he founded Newbridge Networks which was sold to Alcatel for $US7 billion just before the telco crash of 2000.
