Analyst firm TeleGeography has just published this year’s edition of its world map, featuring all the submarine cable systems that make up the arteries of the internet.
The 2014 edition, released today, includes 263 cables that are lit (in service), and 22 that are due to be lit by the end of 2015, making 285 cable systems in total.

Last year’s map (available here) showed 244 cables, and the 2012 edition (available here) had just 150, meaning work has definitely slowed down, but not come to a complete halt.
The Internet seems to be somewhat taken for granted in this modern age of torrents and streaming, so check out the 2014 map for yourself here, and if you're really into cartography you can even order a $US250 print for yourself or a loved one.
