Cylance adds to home computer security options

By

Security vendor Cylance is making a move into the home market, but curiously its new product is not going to be available to all and sundry.

CylanceProtect Home Edition is now available to the company's corporate customers for use on their employees' home computers running Windows 7 or later, or OS X Mavericks or later (including macOS Sierra).

"CylanceProtect Home Edition uses the same algorithm as the enterprise product, so it is fully functional and just as effective, but with a cleaner, easy to use consumer interface," said Cylance senior vice-president and general manager of consumer Christopher Bray.

How easy? It is "is easy to install, easy to manage and configure, updates itself, and automatically protects consumer devices for a 'set it and forget it' security experience", the company claims.

"CylanceProtect is a complete endpoint security product that is able to detect malicious files and prevent them from executing. This means it protects against malware, phishing attempts, and other threat vectors," said Bray.

As previously reported, Cylance's approach does away with traditional signature-based scanning and instead applies AI and machine learning technology to the problem of identifying malware. This renders new malware and unknown future variants useless, according to the company.

Bray explained that CylanceProtect Home Edition is initially available for purchase by the company's corporate customers for use in employees' homes.

The reasoning seems to be that employers benefit by ensuring that the computers used by employees at home are just as well protected as the ones they use at work.

But for organisations that don't think that's a good idea, "Shortly, employees of corporate customers will also be able to purchase and download the product themselves", he added.

"We are very excited to be launching CylanceProtect Home Edition in Australia and New Zealand, disrupting the consumer space in the same way Cylance disrupted the enterprise security market.

"From the conversations we have had with customers in the local market, as well as the US, there has been genuine excitement about the new capabilities we are bringing to employers and employees alike."
