Council says it has introduced Wollongong City Wi-Fi as part of its broader strategy to revitalise the City Centre, and improve the economic, social and cultural life of the city. Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery said: “Free Wi-Fi in the City Centre has great potential to encourage more people to visit, and to stay longer in the area.
“Whether you’re in the city for work or leisure, it’s now easier than ever to connect with local businesses, find out what’s happening, and stay in touch with family and friends. People are increasingly online and using mobile devices in their day to day lives, and Council recognises the importance of having a safe, accessible network.”
Wi-Fi is available in outdoor areas on Crown Street between Keira and Corrimal Streets, the main retail areas, as well as in Globe Lane and the Arts Precinct on Burelli Street, across from the council offices. The free Wi-Fi service will also be extended west along Crown Street to Wollongong Railway Station and Gladstone Avenue in coming weeks.
The system cost an estimated $100,000. It has a three hour usage limit, and data is limited to 250 Mbytes per 24 hours. Wollongong joins an increasing numbers of cities introducing free Wi-Fi – Adelaide announced such a system in late 2012.
