AWS Marketplace: Amazon's cloud app store

By

Amazon's AWS Marketplace makes it as easy to rent software for use in the Amazon Web Services cloud as it is to buy an app for a smartphone.

AWS Marketplace offers a diverse range of commercial and open source software that can be rented by the hour or by the month on Amazon's cloud servers.

The AWS Marketplace makes it easy to find, compare and use software, Amazon officials claimed, with charges going on the same bill as other AWS services used by the customer.

Software developers do not need to make any changes to their products in order to offer them in the AWS Marketplace, and Amazon takes care of billing.

"AWS Marketplace brings the same simple, trusted, and secure online shopping experience that customers enjoy on Amazon.com's retail website to software built for the AWS platform, streamlining the process of doing research and purchasing software," said Terry Hanold, vice president of new business initiatives, AWS.

"AWS Marketplace makes it even easier to run software on AWS because you can find a wide variety of AWS ecosystem providers' solutions, in one place, where much of the work involved in building and deploying solutions on top of AWS has already been done for you by these solutions providers."

Vendors already offering products via AWS Marketplace include CA, Canonical, Check Point, IBM, Microsoft, and SAP.

"AWS Marketplace provides companies like ours an opportunity to easily reach new customers," said Carolee Gearhart, SAP's national vice president of OEM and strategic partner group for North America. "We expect our customers will benefit from SAP's robust BI functionality, while taking advantage of the quick deployment capabilities provided by AWS Marketplace."

By way of example, SAP BusinessObjects costs $US150 per month plus $US0.49 to $US0.79 per hour for the software (excluding AWS usage fees), while IBM WebSphere Application Server costs $US0.79 to $US1.47 per hour including EC2 charges but excluding other AWS usage fees.
