NSW says bye-bye to free Wi-Fi

In the biggest non-surprise of 2008, the Government of Australia’s most populous state, New South Wales, has backpedalled on an election promise that would have seen CBDs of major cities in the state, including Sydney, receive free Wi-Fi.

Qantas has announced that it’s finally delivering SMS and email services to passengers on selected domestic Australian flights by the end of 2008. Alarmingly they have issued no prices (suggesting it will be expensive), while US airlines will introduce in-flight broadband this year – on the cheap!

PCCW & Telecom NZ interconnect IP VPNs

PCCW Global, the international services arm of Hong Kong telco, PCCW, and Telecom New Zealand International (TNZI) have signed an agreement on IP network interconnection that will increase network coverage for both carriers in the Asia Pacific.

RIM debuts GPS & WiFi enabled BlackBerry 8820

Research In Motion has announced the BlackBerry 8820 a quad-band GSM/GPRS and EDGE-enabled smartphone and its first to support WiFi.

iPhone aficionados who need access to corporate email while on the move can thank UK based Synchronica which has added support for the iPhone to the latest release (3.0) of its Mobile Gateway product that allows an enterprise to synchronise messages between a Microsoft Exchange email server and a wide range of smartphones.
