Intel investment in ultrabooks comes at a cost

Intel continued to encounter weaker PC demand in some markets and its margins declined in the first quarter of this year as the company made investments in new products and technologies, including ultrabooks.

Worldwide PC shipments are on track to hit 368 million units this year - a weak result for the year according to one analyst firm - but with the market picking up in 2013 when 400 million units are forecast to be shipped. In Australia, PC shipments are forecast to decline two percent in 2012 over 2011, and desktop PCs will drop 12 percent, while notebook shipment growth is forecast at just two percent.

Ultrabooks, tablets vie for market dominance

Global shipments of ultrabooks are predicted to grow at three times the rate of tablets over the next five years, but despite the strong growth, tablet volumes will remain higher with a forecast of 253 million to be shipped in 2016 compared with 178 million ultrabooks.

Worldwide shipments of PCs dropped towards the end of last year as consumer demand slowed. Ultrabooks, introduced to the market in the holiday season, didn't attract consumers, and the overall decline in PC shipments for the fourth quarter of 2011 was 1.4 percent.

Way back in 2007 I remember seeing Intel demonstrate 'slider' tablet PCs where the screen slid down from a vertical to a horizontal position over the keyboard to create a tablet - long before the iPad hit the scene.
