American firm Qualcomm Technologies, with 29%, remained top of the market for smartphone application processors - also known as system-on-chip - during the second quarter of the year, despite losing three percentage points year-on-year.

Application processor chipsets from Samsung Electronics used in smartphones took the third spot globally in 2019 for the first time, passing Apple, the tech analyst firm Counterpoint Research says, adding that the company and Huawei Technologies were the only two to increase their market share last year.

The global smartphone market saw its first full-year decline in the calendar year 2018, with a drop of 4% in shipments, the analyst firm Counterpoint Research claims, adding that fourth quarter shipments also fell, by 7%, making it the fifth straight quarter of declines.

Chinese smartphone brands OPPO, Xiaomi and vivo have achieved their highest quarterly shipments in the third quarter of 2018, despite the overall shipments showing a drop of 3% year-on-year, the technology analyst firm Counterpoint Research claims.
