Telepresence spurs on APAC market growth

The entry of local players, Hong Kong’s CPCNet and China’s Huawei Technologies into the Asia Pacific market with their own telepresence offerings, has boosted the regional market for the video conferencing technology.

Chinese telecoms giant Huawei Technologies has developed what it claims to be the world's first module to provide both Wi-Fi and HSPA Internet connectivity for Intel's entry level Classmate PCs.

Chinese telecoms heavyweight Huawei Technologies has unveiled its first Android smartphone at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The smartphone, one of a growing number slated to be powered by Google's open source Android operating system, will be commercially available in the third quarter of 2009.

Scandinavian telco, TeliaSonera has issued a press release claiming it has signed "the world's first 4G commercial contracts" and will be "First in the world with next generation's mobile broadband." Supplier Ericsson has jumped on the same bandwagon, but they are both wrong: this is 3G not 4G technology.

Nortel files for bankruptcy protection - UPDATED

Nortel has filed for and been granted bankruptcy protection in its home country, Canada, and says its US and European subsidiaries will make similar applications. (This updated version contains comments from a senior Asian regional Nortel executive).

Huawei claims lead in 21Mbps HSPA devices

Telstra and Sierra Wireless have demonstrated 21 Mbps HSPA devices on Telstra's network, but Sierra admits there is much work to be done before its devices are ready for commercial service. Huawei, however is claiming to have demonstrated "the world's first commercial ready HSPA+ [21Mbps] devices," on PCCW's network in Hong Kong.
