An international team of researchers based at Australia’s Casey Station in Antarctica is drilling into the icecap and undertaking climate research in the hunt for an elusive molecule that helps cleanse the atmosphere of greenhouse gases and ozone-depleting chemicals.

ICT greenhouse gas emissions reduction quantified

Nearly six billion tonnes of CO2 emissions could be eliminated by 2020 through the focussed use of 17 core technologies in four of the world’s major economic sectors, according to a preview of a report released today just ahead of the United Nations’ COP15 climate change conference starting in Denmark this week.

'Green' search engine coming next week

Next Monday -- the same day climate talks get underway in Copenhagen -- a new search engine, Ecosia, will make its debut. The site generates ad revenue the same way Google and Bing do, but 80 percent of revenues go to the World Wildlife Fund.

U.S. study finds surprise within greenhouse gases

Researchers from NASA and Purdue University found that carbon dioxide and methane are not as important as fluorine (F) compounds such as chlorofluorocarbons, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, and nitrogen fluoride when it comes to producing greenhouse gases (GHGs).

CSIRO hybrid plugs into the future

The CSIRO and energy distributor, SP AustNet, have started a three-month road trial of a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), which could one day end up in every Australian driveway, after modification of the car using a US-developed conversion kit at the CSIRO’s laboratories in the Melbourne suburb of Clayton.

IBM leads Green Sigma Coalition

A new alliance led by IBM aims to improve energy, water, waste and greenhouse gas management through interoperability. Green Sigma applies Lean Six Sigma principles and practices to these areas.

IT services group, EDS and SAP Australia and New Zealand have worked together to develop a new carbon accounting solution which, they claim, will make it easier for Australian companies to comply with new federal government emissions guidelines.

A team from the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom found a chemical compound that had replaced a banned greenhouse gas because it was bad for the environment is, itself, also bad for the environment. The culprit is a fumigant with the chemical name sulfuryl fluoride.

Aerosols impact Australian weather

According to an Australian atomospheric scientist, aerosols, both naturally and artifically produced, may cause a much more damaging effect on Australian rainfall and future climate change than previously measured. And, most of it is caused by pollution from the Northern Hemisphere.
