Race for the 5Gbps wireless LAN heats up

With the increasing popularity of high definition video and multimedia today's wireless local area networks just won't be fast enough and work is well advanced to develop technologies with throughputs of 5Gbps operating at frequencies around 60GHz. Australia's NICTA is a lead player, but competition is heating up.

Following the formation earlier this week of the TransferJet consortium to develop ultra-wideband radio technologies that will enable high speed data transfer between mobile devices, the WiMedia Alliance, an established global body dedicated to developing similar technologies, has struck up a relationship with long established ICT standards body Ecma International.

OOXML: the propaganda war has begun

The first salvo in the document standard war of 2008 has been fired - and, predictably, it favours the Microsoft camp. A study by the Burton Group, a firm of consultants, has come down hard on the side of Microsoft Office Open XML.
