GUEST RESEARCH: For the past few years, hackers have increasingly targeted customers and businesses with tainted software boosted via ads. The recipe is simple – cyber-criminal groups set up fake websites for high-interest software and promote them on top of the results page through advertisements.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority reminds the public to be cautious about phone impersonation scams, noting that there are callers pretending to be from companies or government agencies who will claim there’s a problem with an account or device and wanting remote access from their target.

Security vendor Sophos says the attackers behind the AvosLocker ransomware are using the combination of Windows Safe Mode and the AnyDesk remote administration tool to bypass security controls and plant their malware.

Scammers have stolen more than $7.2 million from Australians so far this year by gaining access to home computers, an increase of 184% compared to the same period last year.
