R.I.P. Altavista

By

A little bit of history finally died today, with Yahoo announcing the grisly end of AltaVista.

Yahoo today announced the demise of one of the world's first search engines, AltaVista, telling users the site would be no more as of 8 July.

AltaVista launched way back in 1995 and was the first experience many users had with web search and the Internet more broadly.

It was once one of the most popular search engines around, but it lost ground with the rise of Google and was purchased in 2003 by Yahoo!, which retained the brand but based all AltaVista searches on its own search engine.

Sadly however, Yahoo! only gave a one sentence announcement that it would "focus on creating beautiful products."

"Please visit Yahoo! Search for all of your searching needs", the company said.

Back in 1996, AltaVista became the exclusive provider of search results for Yahoo!, but it took a mere seven years for the tables to be turned.
