LaCie claims fastest bus-powered drive

By

According to LaCie officials, the company's latest Rugged drives are the world's fastest bus-powered storage devices.

The new Rugged drives from LaCie feature Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 interfaces for rapid data transfers.

The solid-state models provide an average transfer rate of 380MBps, while the hard disk model offers 110MBps (35% faster than FireWire 800 drives in LaCie's testing).

Even the hard drive model is said to withstand a 1.2m fall, though dropping is not recommended while the drive is operating.

AES 256-bit file encryption is provided via software included with the drive.

Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 cables are included, and purchasers also receive a 10GB one-year Wuala online storage subscription.

"Since LaCie introduced the Rugged, it has been a favourite of creative professionals," said LaCie CEO Philippe Spruch.

"It's trusted and always with them through the content creation process. Today, LaCie gives the ultimate solution to those professionals. The most impressive speeds I've seen to revolutionise their productivity."

Three models are offered: 1TB hard drive ($299), 120GB SSD ($249) and 256GB SSD ($399).
