Aiven's free plans are supported by community forums and reinforce the company's commitment to the open-source community, saying it is a testament to its vision of democratising open-source technologies and making its platform more accessible.
Aiven's platform simplifies data infrastructure by giving you a fully-managed cloud-hosted environment you can set and forget. You can integrate it into your existing tech stack if you have one, and you can set it up via a web interface, a CLI, or Terraform. So, whether you prefer to point-and-click, script, or make repeatable, deployable config files, Aiven works the way you do.
Ordinarily, plans with Aiven begin at $US 290/month (or $US 0.397/hour) for three dedicated VMs with two CPUs and 2GB RAM, and 90GB total cluster storage, to $US 2,800/month and upwards for correspondingly higher capacity machines. The brand new free plans now allow you to run a single node with one CPU, 1GB RAM, and 5GB storage without any cost. Whether you are a student, a hobbyist, or a professional, there is no barrier to running your own PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Redis database on the Aiven platform.

All free plans include a dedicated instance, all networking costs included, data encryption in transit and at rest, backups, monitoring, and logs. There are no ongoing commitments or hidden costs.
The launch of the Aiven free tier also sees the company launch a community forum, for user-supported help. Of course, as your needs expand you can easily upgrade to a paid plan with a simple click.
“By making our portfolio of open source tools that our customers love accessible to all, we’re enabling the next generation of developers to begin learning and expanding their skill set without having to endure the traditionally high costs,” said Aiven co-founder and CEO Oskari Saarenmaa. “Providing access to these free plans is another step in realizing Aiven’s vision of democratising open source technologies, making them available to everyone and reinforcing our commitment to the open source community.”
The Aiven community forum provides a space for developers to discuss and collaborate on the applications and services they are building with open-source data technologies. Developers can share what they are building, ask questions, and get support on challenges they are facing from other members of the community and Aiven team members.
Aiven APAC solutions architect lead Troy Sellers (pictured) also emphasises the importance of tools and technology accessibility for the young generation of developers and the wider developers’ community:, saying,“Building a software business today is incredibly challenging. Competition is fierce and speed to market, code quality, security, and customer satisfaction are of critical importance. Making developer tools and technologies easily accessible and equitable not only fosters cross-team collaboration amongst the developer community, but also gives start-ups a competitive edgeand allows easy access for young developers learning the tools as well. Hugely important when it comes to creating innovative and sustainable open source applications that will drive the future of open technology.”
While Aiven paid plans are available on AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform, Digital Ocean, and UpCloud, the Aiven free plans are available on nine AWS regions around the world. Aiven also offers a free trial of its paid platform, which is separate from the free plans. The free plans provide the restricted hardware in perpetuity, while the free trial provides $300 of credit for 30 days on the paid platform.
