D-Link adds AI to home and SoHo Wi-Fi

D-Link's new Eagle Pro AI series of Wi-Fi 6 hardware comprises a router, a mesh system, and a mesh range extender.

Designed for homes and small offices, the initial members of the family are the R15 Eagle Pro AI AX1500 Smart Router, M15-2PK and M15-3PK (three nodes) Eagle Pro AI AX1500 Mesh Systems and E15 AX1500 Mesh Range Extender.

In addition to the speed and performance benefits of WI-Fi 6 and the added security of WPA3, the Eagle Pro AI models apply artificial intelligence in a number of ways to optimise performance. The devices continuously scan for the Wi-Fi channel with the least interference, prioritise the most important traffic, adjust the connections between nodes, and continuously review the network and monitor data usage to generate recommendations and weekly reports. Even the parental control function is said to be AI-based.

The $199.95 R15 Eagle Pro AI AX1500 Smart Router offers Wi-Fi coverage up to 230 sq m. If necessary, this can be extended with the E15 Eagle Pro AI Mesh Extender or the M15-2PK and M15-3PK Mesh Systems. Other features include three Gigabit Ethernet ports, and Alexa and Google Assistant compatibility.

The M15-2PK ($279.95) and M15-3PK Eagle Pro AI AX1500 Mesh System ($379.95) provide up to 370 and 500 sq m respectively. A maximum of four units can be used together, and the M15 can be used as a standalone wireless mesh system (ie, without an R15).

The $179.95 E15 Eagle Pro AI AX1500 Mesh Range Extender can extend a network based on the E15 router or M15 mesh system, with coverage up to 230 sq m. It also supports the AI functionality of those systems.

As the E15 plugs directly into a mains socket, installation is simple and tidy. The disadvantages of this arrangement are that in most cases it will position the repeater close to the floor (which doesn't help its range) and – judging from the photo – it may block the adjacent socket of a multiple outlet.

A convenient feature is the provision of a signal strength LED to help determine the best position for the extender.

A Gigabit Ethernet LAN port is included in the M15 and E15.

"The Eagle Pro AI Series is particularly significant as it is the first series to offer a complete range of products that not only integrate the latest in Wi-Fi 6 technology with artificial intelligence to offer incredible Wi-Fi coverage and speed, but have been specifically designed to do so together, from the ground up," said D-Link ANZ managing director Graeme Reardon.

"This means users get the most seamless, powerful, efficient and easy to use Wi-Fi experience possible."
