Google ad boycott spreads to Australia Featured

By

More companies have started pulling their ads from Google due to fears that they may appear on content that is unsuitable. In Australia, Vodafone Australia, Nestle, Bunnings, Foxtel and Caltex have become the latest to do so.

Holden and Kia have also pulled ads from the search giant, the Australian Financial Review reported.

The boycott began in the UK after The Times reported that ads for the government and major brands were appearing next to content that pushed extremist, racist and anti-Semitic material.

Two weeks ago, the British arm of the French firm Havas SA withdrew ads for clients in the UK from YouTube and the Google Display Network.

And last week, American companies AT&T, Verizon, Starbucks and General Motors said they were pulling their ads from YouTube.

The Age reported that Foxtel had expressed concern after learning that one of its pre-roll video ads was appearing on a page that contains anti-Semitic material.

It said the ad was displayed on a video interview with Brendon O'Connell, a man convicted for racial hatred in 2011.

Caltex was said to have acted after an ad appeared on a video published by Blair Cottrell, a leader in the extreme right group United Patriots Front.

Another company to suspend advertising was the accounting firm Xero.

Last week, the Wall Street Journal said its reporters had found ads for Coca-Cola, Starbucks, Toyota, Dish Network, Berkshire Hathaway’s Geico unit and Google’s own YouTube Red subscription service on two videos with the word "nigger" in the title.

iTWire has contacted Google Australia for comment.
