Not content with messing up Google sites like Gmail and Search – it may not work with Outlook Web Access, Citrix Receiver, LastPass, some Adobe Flash content, WordPress editor – one of the world’s largest content management systems - sometimes does not open hyperlinks, and can give very strange results in the so called compatibility mode. It may suffer frequent lockups and some sites do not display correctly.

The Microsoft Community pages are littered with issues seemingly all caused by the upgrade and the usual response is clear the cache, reset to default, disable tool bars, and avoid compatibility mode.

One apparent diagnostic step is to run IE from the command prompt to ensure that it is run in No Add-ons mode - from the command prompt type iexplore.exe –extoff.

Another possible cause is graphics card drivers - On the Advanced tab, go to the Accelerated graphics section, and then turn on Software Rendering mode by choosing the Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering box.

To turn off Compatibility view, go to Tools, Compatibility View Settings and uncheck "Use Microsoft Compatibility lists".

Unfortunately, I have tried every known cure and it still has issues.

Microsoft rolled out a compatibility patch over the weekend but initial reports are not encouraging. I am certain that time will fix the issues.

The cause – IE 11 tries to look like Mozilla by removing the MSIE token from the user-agent string – and sometimes fails. Simply put the web site does not recognise it.

It seems that for now download and use Firefox is the best fix for Windows IE 11 issues.
