Skype comes to iPad

By

It's been a while coming, but Skype for iPad is finally here.

The launch of Skype for iPad was an on-off-on affair, with the app being "temporarily removed" from the iTunes Store. The only explanation given was that it "went live prematurely".

But some 15 hours later the app was back, and has attracted mostly positive ratings and reviews at the Australian iTunes Store.

Skype for iPad allows video calls over Wi-Fi or 3G (an iPad 2 is required for two-way video; the original iPad can only receive video), and the usual features such as text chat, Skype and phone voice calls, and SMS are included.

"We've heard the demand for Skype video calling on more devices and we are delighted to deliver on this with our new Skype for iPad app." said Neil Stevens, Skype's vice president and general manager for product and marketing.

"Skype for iPad gives Skype users the best of both worlds for video calling: the large screen and display of a personal computer, but the portability of a mobile phone. We've taken advantage of the iPad's large screen and optimised the user experience along with making it easier than ever to navigate through the new intuitive interface."

The free app requires the latest iPad firmware.
