The company claims a catalogue of more than 540,000 books in Kindle format, although the number is smaller in markets outside the US.
As with other versions, Kindle for Android will include the Whispersync technology to synchronise bookmarks across devices. In addition to the Kindle itself, reader applications are already available for iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Windows, Mac OS X, and BlackBerry.
Other common features include the ability to search and browse the Kindle catalogue, preview and purchase books, access previously purchased books stored on Amazon's servers, adjust font sizes, and read in portrait or landscape mode.
"Kindle for Android is the perfect companion application for Kindle and Kindle DX owners, and is also a great way for customers to enjoy over 540,000 books in the Kindle Store even if they don't yet have a Kindle," said Jay Marine, director, Amazon Kindle.
"We think customers are going to love the convenience and simplicity of having instant access to a massive selection of books from Amazon on their Droid, Nexus, Incredible and many more Android devices," he added.
