Apple and Samsung dominate the local market and any other brand has to fight and keep fighting to retain whatever market share it gains. But then Oppo is used to this kind of fight and constantly shows up as the third or fourth brand globally.
It thus seems eminently sensible to release the Oppo Reno10 5G, the lowest priced model among the three that have been launched in other countries. At $749, the Reno is a bargain considering the features it offers, more so considering that one has to fork out about double that amount for comparable features.
The device has a display that slopes to both sides. The left and right bezels are just 1.57mm and lower one is 2.32mm. This leaves a 93% screen-to-body ratio. The 3D curved design offers the front display at an angle of 56 degrees and a similar design for the rear makes it easier to grip.

The 6.7-inch AMOLED Screen is protected with AGC Dragontrail Star 2 cover glass to provide what is claimed to be up to 20% improved drop resistance compared to Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Understandably, I did not venture to test out this claim during my 18-odd days of using the device!
The camera system consists of a 64MP Ultra-Clear Main Camera, a 32MP Telephoto Portrait Camera with an IMX709 sensor, a 112° 8MP Ultra Wide Camera, and a 32MP Ultra-Clear Selfie Camera. The Telephoto Portrait Camera has a 2X optical zoom, large RGBW IMX709 sensor, and is claimed to have the highest resolution for this price segment. The pixel array allows for an increase of 60% in overall light intake and the image noise can be reduced by up to 35% compared to typical RGGB sensors.
Portrait Mode allows adjustments of aperture settings between f1.4-f16, meaning that the degree of bokeh and bokeh flare can be varied. The Front Camera features a high resolution 32MP sensor with ƒ/2.4 aperture and a 22mm equivalent focal length for clear selfies.
There is storage aplenty, with 256GB available and 8GB of memory ensuring a snappy performance. Additionally, the device can provide up to 8GB of virtual memory if this is enabled. An SD card of up to 2TB is supported, though it is unlikely to be needed given the existing storage. The company says it has worked with Google to build what it claims to be "the industry's most thorough Android memory underlay reconstruction to ensure a smooth experience in memory-consuming applications with heavy-load scenarios".
Dual stereo speakers and an ultra-volume mode mean listening to music of any kind is a pleasurable experience. The ultra-volume mode allows boosting of the volume to double its regular output in order to accommodate high-pitched sounds.
The Reno10 5G supports infra-red and can be used as a remote to directly control air-conditioners, TVs, set-top boxes, and other infrared-enabled electronic devices.
On the security front, the inbuilt smarts automatically recognise and pixellate sensitive information like profile photos and names on chat screenshots with a single click. The Reno10 5G has a number of third-party safety and privacy certifications, including ISO27001, ISO27701, ePrivacy and TRUSTe.
The operating system is version 13.1 of ColorOS, Oppo's modified version of Android 13. I can't say I am a fan of Android, but let me leave it there. It takes quite a while to remove all Google's little touches which enable snooping to satisfy a nerd like me.
The device comes with a charger, but there is no protective plastic case. It has been on sale since 3 August at JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks and OPPO Australia’s Online Store, in Ice Blue and Silvery Grey.
