Networking giant Cisco has revealed the Cisco Security Cloud, which is claims will be the industry's most open platform, protecting the integrity of the entire IT ecosystem – without public cloud lock-in.

The British Information Commissioner's Office has hit American credit information provider Equifax with a fine of £500,000 (A$909,321) over a data breach which the US firm disclosed on 7 September 2017 and which it said had occurred between mid-May and July that year. Passwords of British customers were stored in plain text, the ICO said.

Malicious attackers are abusing a Cisco utility to scan the company's switches and change software in order to stage attacks, the Cisco Talos Intelligence Group has warned.

If no major ransomware outbreaks have been witnessed for more than six months, then the reason is probably that most hackers who earn a mite from such exercises are now concentrating on a quieter way of making money: slipping cryptocurrency mining scripts onto users' PCs.

Ransomware is not new – using social engineering and clever spear phishing millions of computers have been held to ransom. But ransomware attacks on servers are new.
