Security researchers have found that ransomware gangs are keeping in step with IT industry trends, with a new Windows ransomware strain, RegretLocker, able to encrypt data on virtual disks.
Windows ransomware known as SamSam has earned its creators almost US$6 million since late 2015, the security firm Sophos says, with the malware using carefully targeted attacks to obtain a ransom. Australia has been a target in about 2% of the attacks using this malware.
Multinational healthcare diagnostics company Laboratory Corporation of America — better known as LabCorp — suffered a ransomware attack which hit one of its genetic-testing units over the last weekend.
