New low-priced online music store hits U.S. market

U.K. digital media company 7digital has opened a U.S. music store with pricing that undercuts iTunes, Amazon, and Rhapsody. Individual tracks go for US$0.77 and albums for $7.77.

On-demand music comes to the iPhone

Two iPhone apps that permit on-demand music streaming have been approved by Apple for inclusion in the iPhone App Store. It's the first time on-demand streaming has been available, and a breakthrough for subscription music services.

Subscription music coming to the iPhone?

Online music service Rhapsody is submitting its streaming music app to the iPhone App Store for Apple's review. If approved, it won't be the first streaming music app, but it will be the first on-demand one. As such, it poses more of a challenge to iTunes than the other services do.

UK broadband, TV, phone, and wireless provider Virgin Media has announced a deal with Universal Music that would permit customers to both stream and download as much music as they wanted for a single subscription price.
