Apple has hit the Israeli firm NSO Group with a lawsuit over the targeting of iPhone users with its Pegasus spyware.

Software from surveillance firm Circles, that can be used to exploit weaknesses in the global mobile system and snoop on calls, texts and locations, is likely being used by Australia among a number of other countries, The Citizen Lab, a digital rights watchdog at the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto, claims.

Canadian digital rights organisation The Citizen Lab claims to have found evidence that mobile spyware known as Pegasus, sold by the Israeli firm NSO Group, is being used in at least 45 countries.

The human rights group Amnesty International says one of its staff has been targeted with powerful smartphone malware known as Pegasus which is sold by an Israel-based company NSO Group.

Security researchers have found what appears to be a highly sophisticated piece of malware that infects Android systems. It has been named Pegasus for Android, after the original Pegasus which targeted iOS.
