PC processor market to continue free fall in 2009

The global PC microprocessor market was devastated in the last quarter of 2008 and looks set to continue its precipitous drop in 2009, according to a new report. What has been described as the worst decline on record could have been even worse if it had not been for the emergence of the netbooks.

Intel has demonstrated a working 32nm-based microprocessor which will be used in mobile and desktop systems slated for production in the fourth quarter of 2009. The new Westmere processors will include a 6-core, 12 thread range code-named Gulftown and promises increased performance over the current Core 2 models.

AMD goes to Shanghai, searching for Dragons!

AMD has announced widespread availability of its 45 nanometre Quad-Core AMD Opteron server processor codenamed "Shanghai". The chipmaker has also given details on its second generation enthusiast-class desktop platform codenamed "Dragon" and its upcoming 45nm AMD Phenom II X4 quad-core desktop processors codenamed "Deneb."

Researchers at MIT and Texas Instruments have designed a new chip that they claim could be up to 10 times more energy-efficient than the current generation. The power consumption in the new chip is so low that devices using them may even be able to be recharged by human body heat.
