After what seems an eternity, an Australian company, born and bred right here, has landed what always seemed to be impossible: a whole-of-government cloud deal with an Australian Government entity.

Amazon plans to enter the Australian Protected cloud market, but it really can't be bothered to offer the same service as it does to the American Government, it would appear.

The author of a detailed analysis on the Federal Government's proposed identity scheme, GovPass — a trial of which is scheduled to begin this month — says he worked closely with the Digital Transformation Agency while preparing it, but ultimately disagreed with the agency on its implications.

Australia is scheduled to begin a trial of its Govpass ID system in October, a mere two months down the line. Yet, nobody knows who will be the cloud host for the system after Vault Systems (which has recently rebranded itself as Vault) was unceremoniously yanked from the job.

When the Federal Government begins its trial of the identity solution Govpass in October, it will be both a proud and a nervous time for Rupert Taylor-Price, the man behind Vault Systems, the company providing the cloud infrastructure for the solution.

Australia's digital identity program, GovPass, will receive $92.4 million to be taken to completion, beginning in 2018-19, the Federal Budget papers show.
