The Drizzle tale: a fork that's growing

Nearly three years ago, when open source hacker Brian Aker created a fork of MySQL it did not look like anything that was much needed - at the time Sun owned MySQL and the popular database software looked to have a bright future.

Two organisations, along with Free Software Foundation head Richard M. Stallman, have written to the European Commission, asking that Oracle not be allowed to acquire MySQL as part of its larger acquisition of Sun Microsystems.

Open database alliance reaches takeoff stage

MySQL co-founder Ulf Michael Widenius's dream of having a fully-fledged Open Database Alliance is slowly reaching fruition with the announcement that the project, begun in May this year, has reached its second stage.
