Virtual backup practices found lacking: report

Financial services organisations around the world have moved to minimise risk in the wake of widespread natural disasters last year by pushing disaster recovery to the top of their IT agendas, although compliance, security and virtual server protection remains a big concern for the industry, according to a global report just released.

Larry Steinke of St. Francis High School needed a simple, low-maintenance data backup solution, so he could focus on other pressing IT needs at the school. With over 1700 students and 100 faculty members at the school, Steinke has a lot of data to manage. On a daily basis, the IT team at St. Francis deals with email, directory, and web services as well as cross-platform support and databases full of teacher and student files.

According to the Acronis Global Disaster Recovery (DR) Index 2012 vertical market findings, the public sector is the least confident industry in backup and disaster recovery, with most respondents citing a lack of budget and resources as the key challenges. A third (33%) do not spend any budget at all on backup and DR and 41% say they lack skilled IT personnel to manage all their systems.
