The take-up of electric vehicles in Australia is proceeding apace, with hybrids gaining the edge as the market share of vehicles running internal combustion engines continues to fall, the Australian Automobile Association says.

Global sales of electric vehicles in 2022 crossed 10.2 million, a rise of 65% year-on-year, the technology analyst firm Counterpoint Research says, adding that this figure would have crossed 11 million were it not for the resurgence of COVID-19 in China.

The share of new electric vehicles sold in Australia increased to 3.39% in September compared to 2.05% the previous year, a report from the Electric Vehicle Council says.

More than half of the cars sold in Norway in March this year were electric vehicles, according to the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association which monitors sales.
