VIDEO Interview: Contino's Gerhard Schweinitz identifies the top reasons why technologists join or leave companies

By

GUEST INTERVIEW: Gerhard Schweinitz, is the APAC Head of Talent at Contino, the global enterprise digital transformation consultancy, and he joined iTWireTV to discuss the company, its successes, how to retain top tech talent and plenty more.

Contino. The company bills itself as a global enterprise digital transformation consultancy that helps enterprises transform by modernising ways of working and delivering high quality, secure software change.

With core offerings in Cloud Platform Build & Migration, DevOps Transformation, Cloud Security, Cloud Native Software Development, and Data Platforms & Analytics, the company claims over 500 successful transformation projects with over 150 of the world’s largest enterprises, with companies such as Vodafone, Dow Jones, Adidas, Allianz, Jetstar, Medibank, Morgan Stanley, Allianz, NAB and LG CNS among many others

Amongst a host of interesting content at its Content Hub, Contino recently released its latest study called "The Voice of Talent 2021", which identified the top 10 reasons why technologists join or leave an organisation, while capturing insights from IT professionals working in Australia across a range of industries, age groups and career levels.

More about the research is below, but first, here's my interview with Gerhard Schweinitz, the APAC Head of Talent at Contino - please watch and read on!

The research unveils that “when identifying what would drive employees to join an organisation, respondents from a range of small to large enterprises noted that the key reason is the ability to work with modern technology and practices (public cloud, DevOps, agile, machine learning, artificial intelligence).

On the other hand, the research shows “bad management or poor leadership were unanimously cited as the top reason that would urge employees to leave.

“This was consistent across all demographics and company size. Company politics also ranked high on the list along with the need for flexibility, career progression and use of outdated technology. This demonstrates the needs of employees in a new hybrid working model, highlighting that continuous digital transformation is crucial for organisations to remain competitive.”

Of the research, Schweinitz said: “The competition for top talent has never been more aggressive than now. Any organisation who wishes to attract and retain the right people must understand how people view the workplace now. Our research shows that as businesses begin their journey towards recovery, they need strong leadership to chart the way forward to success.”

As the war for talent intensifies, the research underscores the need for employers to understand the needs of their employees in order to ensure that the best talent is retained.

Craig Howe, Managing Director, APAC at Contino said, “With the Australian borders locked down minimising inbound tech talent, there is a finite talent pool. Compounding the situation, we have seen a significant increase in large enterprises embarking on digital transformation projects to increase velocity, agility and cost reduction throughout 2020 and continuing in 2021.

“These driving factors have made recruiting the right tech talent all the more difficult. Contino hopes the Voice of Talent Report provides key insights from which leaders can develop the right talent strategies as well as supporting business models to attract and retain top talent.”

  • In the video interview above, I started by introducing Gerhard, welcoming him to the program, and asking him to tell us about Contino in 2021.
  • We spoke about the Contino’s strategic partnerships, the company’s various clients in Australia and around the world, its team, and the recently released Voice of Talent 2021 research.
  • We spoke about the ongoing COVID lockdowns in Australia and the flexible future of working from home, and key strategies that are critical to employee engagement and talent retention.
  • We started towards the end of the interview with Gerhard sharing memories of his first computer and his own history in the world of tech, how he sees Contino evolving over the next couple of years and the industry by 2030, great advice Gerhard has received in life, and his final message to iTWire viewers and readers, and Contino’s current and future customers and partners.

So, please watch the video interview above, and take a look at the Voice of Talent 2021 study!
