WITHINGS announces home IoT urine health lab

By

WITHINGS has released a range of affordable and innovative clinically-validated wireless devices, like its cardio scale, ScanWatch smartwatch, sleep analyser, blood pressure monitor, and more. And now it's announced U-Scan, the world's first hands-free connected home urine lab to provide metabolic insights for everyone, and information for women to manage monthly cycles.

The WITHINGS U-Scan has taken four years of development and is one of the company's most technologically advanced devices to date. It is a breakthrough in-home biomarker analysis platform, providing a miniaturised health lab that hygienically sits within any toilet bowl and unlocks the wealth of health information in your daily urine.

With more than 3000 metabolites, urine is an extraordinary witness to assess and monitor one’s health. It gives an immediate snapshot of the body’s balance and is integral in monitoring and detecting a large variety of medical conditions and health information. While we urinate on average seven times a day, urine analyses are usually performed only once a year. WITHINGS U-Scan can revolutionise home health by making it possible to conduct biomarker assessments from the comfort and privacy of a person’s own bathroom.

U-Scan is a versatile platform comprising a technologically advanced pebble-shaped reader and changeable analysis cartridges designed to assess specific biomarkers without the need for external sample capture or unhygienic strips. The accompanying smartphone app Health Mate provides a wealth of actionable insights based on daily readings. It debuts with two consumer cartridges U-Scan Cycle for women’s monthly cycle tracking and syncing and U-Scan Balance, a detailed metabolic guide to hydration and nutrition. It will have the potential to assess hundreds of health and medical conditions.

WITHINGS CEO Mathieu Letombe said, "The ability of U-Scan to perform daily urine analysis from the home allows WITHINGS to take its mission to help consumers and physicians fully utilise urine data to an entirely new level. It’s one of the most exciting and complex products we have ever announced which will help people manage health outcomes and prevent countless diseases. We begin this journey with U-Scan Cycle and Balance and look forward to announcing many more programs on an ongoing basis.

The way it works is like this:

  1. the rechargeable U-Scan reader collects urine and can distinguish between that and other liquids. A thermal sensor detects the presence of urine and begins a sample within a microfluidic circuit. Samples are injected into a test pod and the chemical reaction is read by an optical module. The system purges liquids and is cleaned with every flush. With Stream ID (yes, seriously) the product can also distinguish between various users via low-energy radar sensors.
  2. The rotating cylindrical U-Scan cartridge contains dozens of miniaturised test pods to deliver clinical-grade results. Each pod is a hermetic cavity. When the U-Scan reactor delivers the sample to the injection point, the test pod is pierced to allow a small amount of urine to enter. The chemical analysis begins in moments once the reagants react. Results are transmitted via Wi-Fi, and the cartridges rotate to expose the next test pod to the injection point. Each cartridge can support up to three months' worth of readings.
  3. The Health Mate smartphone app collects results and provides details, guidance, and actionable insights, to help people build better habits. U-Scan Balance will show an analysis of specific gravity, pH, vitamin C, and ketone levels. U-Scan Cycle will show an analysis of key hormones, LH surge, alongside key hydration and dietary biomarkers and more. The results will help manage ovulation windows, as well as help all people optimise their hydration and nutrients.

Pricing and availability will be announced closer to the launch.
