Windows 8.1 is now here Featured

By

Windows 8.1 is available as a free update to Windows 8 or RT devices from today.

Most users will obtain it via the Windows Store which means you will need to login with an 'approved' Microsoft identity.

The download is 2.63GB and you can keep working while it is updating. Any Windows 8 PC will run it but if you buy the full retail product to update a Windows XP, Vista, or 7 PC then a minimum of 1GHz processor, 2GB ram and 20GB free hard disk space is required.

Local retail pricing (incl. GST) in Australia is:

  • Windows 8.1 - AU$149.99
  • Windows 8.1 Pro - AU$399.99
  • Windows 8.1 Pro Pack - AU$249.99

Readers have asked if its ‘safe’ to update – the answer is ‘it should be’ but if you wish to be cautious wait a few days to see if there are any issues. iTWire will install the product on several devices over the coming days and report on its experiences.

iTwire has covered some of the 8.1 features here  and here.
