Seniors love computers

By

Recent research from McAfee reveals that seniors – 50-75 years old – have embraced the internet with 85% using it daily spending 3.4 hours online, and have done so over the past five+ years. Proof positive that this group have discovered “that the internet is too good to miss.”

At the launch of McAfee’s Silver Surfer research I briefly met Nan Bosler, President of the Australian Seniors Computer Clubs Association (ASCCA).

Nan was a bundle of - dare I mention the term – proud octogenarian enthusiasm, able to rattle off technical specs and instantly changing my view of seniors computing skills – although I too am one and should not have made assumptions based on my family's lack of IT expertise!

I was intrigued that ASCCA ran an annual conference – it is on now - 12 and 13 November in Sydney - with a program that would interest any computer user – but also that there were about 150 ASCCA affiliated computer clubs around Australia and tens of thousands of members.

The Club directory  lists some 90 clubs in NSW, 13 in Queensland, 30 in WA, 9 in Victoria and elsewhere – Nan is keen to see these numbers increase in every state. ASCCA has a club resources page that has tools to start ASCCA clubs at retirement villages or as part of Probus Clubs, or U3A or the like.

ASCCA also runs regular training sessions – all at very low cost. In October and November, it has sessions on eBay shopping, Skype, Google, Facebook, Tablets, iPad, Android, PC, and Using Word and PowerPoint.

As silver becomes the “new grey” in Australia remember that ASCCA exists – it may be a very pleasant way to keep up with computing advances and surely beats Golf …
