MUST-SEE KEYNOTE: Google launches Pixel, Pixel XL, Google Assistant, Google Home, Wi-Fi and more Featured

By

Once again, Google has thrown down the gauntlet to Apple, and has made the utmost effort to out-Apple Apple as much as it possibly can.

With Samsung’s Note7 not yet running Google’s latest, greatest and smartest Android version — Android Nougat 7.1 — and with Samsung having suffered its extremely unfortunate battery issues that led to a recall, Google is making its biggest and best pitch for Android and all smartphone users yet.

The best way to experience everything Google is offering in 2016, which includes both new 5-inch and 5.5-inch Pixel and Pixel XL phones, and also the new Google Assistant, the new Google Home device that aims to completely outdo the Amazon Echo, the new Chromecast Ultra, and Google’s new in-home Wi-Fi routers to take on traditional Wi-Fi router makers — and more — is to watch the keynote presentation for yourself. It’s just a little below, and there’s a ton of other new Google videos to watch as well.

However, a few standout points before we get there, like the claim of having the best smartphone camera, even better than Apple’s, with a DxOMark of 89, which is three points higher than the iPhone 7 at 86.

Google’s Assistant aims to outdo Siri and usher in the kind of natural language interface talking to the computer that Star Trek made famous.

There’s also the fact that Google Photos lets you upload your photos and videos, including those in 4K, and have unlimited storage while keeping them in their original resolutions.

You also get free 24/7 support on your Google phone so you can talk to a Google tech support person and even share your screen with them so they can see what you’re doing.

A point about how the Pixel phones have no camera bump didn’t get any laughs but it was an obvious jab at Apple, as was a part in one of the videos noting how both models did include the 3.5mm headphone socket.

Full details of all Google’s new products can be see at the ‘Made By Google’ page here

Now, it is very important to note that the actual presentation starts at the 25-minute and 35-second mark. Before that is 25 minutes of a still frame telling you the video is about to start soon.

It starts with a custom made scene from the Silicon Valley TV show, with one character making fun of the other.

The actual presentation starts at the 28-minute mark, and the presentation on the Pixel Phones starts at 44 minutes at 10 seconds.

For those who want to see Google making fun of Apple, which I noticed when watching the live stream, astute Google commenters have noted that the first such "Apple burn" happens at the 45-minute and 11-second mark, and a second such "burn" happens at the 1 hour, 3 minutes and 54-second mark.

Here’s the video in full – more thereafter, please read on, where you’ll also see shorter videos of the specific products, which are the new video ads Google has created.

I also took a video with Cal from Google’s US HQ taking us through a demo of how the new Google Assistant software works.

Full and detailed specs for both phones can be seen here, but in short, they have:

2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 4, 4GB LPDDR4 RAM, 32GB or 128GB storage, SnapDragon 821 processor, 12.3 Megapixel rear camera with 1.55um pixels and f/2.0 aperture, a front facing 8 megapixel camera with 1.4um pixels and f/2.4 aperture, up to 4K video recording, amazing video stabilisation, USB-C, compatibility with Google’s Daydream VR headset, fast charging delivering seven hours of power in just 15 minutes of charging, a 3.5mm headphone jack, Cat 11 4G LTE speeds and plenty more.

A built-in app lets you transfer contacts, messages, photos, videos and more from iOS 8 and Android devices to the Pixel phones, with a built-in adapter letting you connect and transfer via wire (with other methods also available).

In Australia, both smartphones will be available in "Very Silver" and "Quite Black" colours on a range of Go Mobile Plus and My Business Mobile plans in 32GB and 128GB variants.

As an example, Telstra is promoting the 5-inch 32GB Pixel smartphone on a $95 Go Mobile Plus or My Business Mobile plans with 10GB (8GB + 2GB bonus) of data to use in Australia and $4/mth handset repayments when customers stay connected for 24 months (min cost $2376).

Naturally, the 5.5-inch model and the 128GB variants will cost more on plans.

Telstra says that its "customers who can’t wait until 20 October to secure their Google phone can pre-order from 6.30am on 5 October by heading to telstra.com/pixelphone".

As seen in the photo below, the Australian outright prices for the 5-inch Pixel are $1079 for the 32GB version, and $1229 for the 128GB model.

For the 5.5-inch Pixel XL model, it’s $1269 for the 32GB model and $1419 for the 128GB model.
