And one such player is Sony's new BDPS790, a slimline unit with a stack of extra functions.
Let's get the Blu-ray stuff out of the way first: the specs include 4K upscaling (although Sony's VPL-VW1000ES 4K projector already handles that), noise reduction. 2D-3D conversion, and support for BD-Live, BDAV, BDMV, mixed disc and hybrid disc.
Ethernet and Wi-Fi are built in (presumably 802.11n, but the specs are quiet on that point apart from mentioning that it is 2.4GHz only), and used to gain access to in-home and external services.

There's also Twitter and Facebook integration, Skype (which can be used with the optional CMUBR100 camera), and a web browser.
The BDPS790 works as a DLNA client for photo, music and video playback (and unlike some of Sony's earlier connected TVs that only played MPEG PS and AVCHD video, Xvid, WMV9, MPEG-2 PS and TS, and MPEG-4 AVC are all mentioned in the specs). MP3 AAC, WMA9 and LPCM (WAV) audio content are also supported.
If you don't have a DLNA server, photo, music and video playback are supported via the front USB socket. And if you find traditional remote controls passé, a Media Remote remote control app is available for the iPhone, iPod touch and Android.
The BDPS790 retails at $429.
