Showcase of games that change thinking

By

Much of our time playing video games is spent in mindless pursuits, granted enjoyable but somewhat shallow goals of blasting virtual foes or flinging mildly annoyed birds around.  Well it doesn’t have to be like that always, Games for Change Festival aims to cultivate new ideas and thinking about how games can provide solutions to social, humanitarian and development challenges.

The two day event coming to Melbourne in November will bring together the social impact sector, the gaming industry, government, business, media, academia and the arts to grow the field and collaborate on how individuals and organisations can learn from the power of digital games and play to achieve positive social, educational and business outcomes.

Here are some more details on the Games for Change Festival on November 15-16 hosted by RMIT University’s GEELab and conducted at RMIT University’s Design Hub in Melbourne (Building 100, Swanston Street Melbourne).

There will be FREE outdoor play events for everyone to join in the fun, along with 35 renowned local and international speakers who will partake in the interactive event, including keynotes from Heather Kelley - dubbed by Fast Company as "one of the most influential women in technology" - and popular Japanese game director, visual designer, planner and costume character actor, Keita Takahashi, maker of video games such as Katamari Damacy. Speakers representing organisations ranging from World Vision to the State Library of Victoria will share their experience of using game thinking to build awareness and community participation.

The Games Arcade has free outdoor events (Fed Square & BMW Edge Theatre) which are fit for young and old, including:
