The technology industry has made incredible strides in gender diversity over the years. While there is still room for growth, the progress we’ve witnessed is nothing short of inspiring. As we mark International Women’s Day, I reflect on my own journey in the IT sector and celebrate the remarkable advancements shaping a more inclusive future.

A Changing Landscape

When I began my IT career in the 1990s, gender diversity was rare. Studying IT and artificial intelligence, I was the only woman in my program. The industry at the time was heavily male-dominated, particularly in leadership roles. However, today’s technology landscape is far more diverse and welcoming.

Leadership in tech is no longer solely defined by technical expertise; it now encompasses business strategy, collaboration, and people leadership. Skills such as empathy, communication, and active listening—strengths that were often attributed as feminine characteristics —are now recognised as essential for success.

Organisations are also taking intentional steps to widen their talent pools. Recruitment efforts, mentorship programs, and initiatives designed to support diverse candidates are gaining traction. Women are not only entering the workforce in greater numbers but are also excelling in leadership positions and shaping the future of the industry.

Embracing Opportunities for Greater Inclusion

While progress is ongoing, the momentum toward greater gender diversity is strong. Workplaces are increasingly acknowledging the importance of flexible work arrangements, inclusive cultures, and equal opportunities for career advancement.

To accelerate progress, we can take meaningful action in several ways:

  • Mentorship and Sponsorship: Established female leaders can guide and empower the next generation, fostering a cycle of growth and opportunity.
  • Male Allies Driving Change: When men in leadership actively support their female colleagues, champion inclusivity, and challenge unconscious bias, it strengthens the entire industry.
  • Confidence and Career Advancement: Encouraging women to advocate for themselves in salary negotiations and promotions builds a more empowered workforce. Workshops and career coaching can play a significant role in this.

Leadership as a Catalyst for Progress

Corporate leaders have a crucial role in driving change. Organisations that prioritise diversity not only foster stronger, more innovative teams but also outperform their peers. By committing to inclusive hiring practices, leadership accountability, and an equitable workplace culture, businesses can position themselves at the forefront of positive transformation. This is true of my experience at Rimini Street where I started out in an individual contributor role in sales, to now overseeing large segments of the business as the regional general manager of Oceania.

Looking Ahead

Technology continues to shape the world in unprecedented ways, and the teams behind its innovation must be as diverse as the people they serve. Women bring unique perspectives that fuel creativity, enhance decision-making, and strengthen collaboration in an industry that thrives on innovation.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let’s not only recognise how far we’ve come but also commit to continued progress. Gender diversity is not just an aspiration, it is a key driver of success, equity, and industry-wide excellence.

To the women in technology: step forward with confidence, your contributions are invaluable. To our male colleagues, continue to be the allies who advocate for fairness and inclusion. And to organisations everywhere: lead with purpose, because the future of tech depends on it.

Together, we are building a more diverse, inclusive, and forward-thinking technology industry – one where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
