iPad tsunami crashes onto Australian shores May 28

By

A flock of Apple's new sensational iPad models will hit Australian stores on May 28, starting from $629 and ending at $1049 for the high end 3G model. Australia will be one of nine countries in the eagerly anticipated second wave of the release of Apple's newest wonder product.

The iPad is available in Australia for a recommended retail price of $629 for 16GB, $759 for 32GB, and $879 for 64GB for Wi-Fi models.  Wi-Fi + 3G equipped models will be available for a recommended retail price of $799 for 16GB, $928 for 32GB and $1049 for 64GB. iPad will be sold through the Apple Store, Apple's retail stores and select Apple Authorised Resellers.

These prices are suprisingly similar to the US, where the 16GB base model for example is available for $499 US. Aussie customers can preorder all iPad models from Apple's online store beginning on Monday, 10 May.

In the US, Apple has already sold over one million iPads and customers have downloaded over 12 million apps from the App Store, as well as over 1.5 million ebooks from the new iBookstore. This puts the iPad ahead of the first generation iPhone in sales over the same time frame, and has exceeded even Apple's expectations.

The phenomenal success of the device has led to a delay in countries like Australia, where the launch was originally expected in April.

In case you've been living under a rock, Apple's iPad is similar to its iPhone and iPod Touch products, but supersized. Users can browse the web, read and send email, share photos, watch HD videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks  using iPad's the device's multi-touch user interface. One of the device's key assets is its size - the iPad is 13.4mm thin and weighs just 680 gms, making it thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook.

iPad includes new apps designed especially for iPad and will run almost all of the more than 200,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone or iPod Touch. Developers have already created more than 5,000 new apps designed for iPad that take advantage of its multi-touch interface, large screen and high-quality graphics.

Apple plans to release iPad in Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore in July. Apple will announce availability, local pricing and pre-order plans for these nine additional countries at a later date.
