The day of reckoning has arrived for Symantec, McAfee, Kapersky and the myriad of other would-be anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall and assorted anti-malware peddlers. Their one-time benefactor Microsoft, the company that enabled them to build thriving businesses by selling products to protect its less than perfect operating system Windows, has pulled the plug by releasing its own security package.

Microsoft and eBay rumours defy facts

levitateWe recently saw a rumour about Microsoft buying Yahoo, started by a conjecture piece in The Wall Street Journal,  get quashed by Yahoo. Now a similar rumour about Microsoft buying eBay is doing the rounds as a result of a New York Post article.  However, those who may be excited by the prospect are likely to be disappointed.

Ballmer gets Vista message back on track

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has gone the extra mile to make sure he has conveyed the "right" message to the media about the release date of the company's new operating system, Windows Vista. According to Ballmer, who is now in Seoul, his comments yesterday in Tokyo about the release of Vista being pushed back a few weeks were misinterpreted by the press and that Vista is on track to ship in January 2007. However, the cagey CEO has left himself an escape clause.

Microsoft gives Windows Live Local facelift

Microsoft has actually turned its online mapping product Windows Live Local into a pretty useful tool with new features for the product that it unveiled yesterday. Key enhancements include integration with Outlook XP and 2003, integration with Windows Live messenger and live traffic reports.

Internet moguls in deals, mergers speculation

The past few weeks have witnessed increasing speculation about deals, mergers and acquisitions involving many of the biggest names and most trafficked sites in the internet space. Early on, it was rumours of Microsoft buying Yahoo or just Yahoo's search business. Now that one has been put to bed by Yahoo CEO Terry Semel, fresh speculation has emerged about both a merger and a massive search deal.

Microsoft takes the virtualisation plunge

Microsoft intends to have a beta version of a new hypervisor virtualization system before the end of the year in an attempt to bridge the gap between itself and the field in both proprietary and open source markets on the Intel platform. The new hypervisor technology will enable system administrators to run multiple operating systems in virtual machines on a single server.

If one is to believe the latest figures purveyed by online traffic watcher Hitwise, Google continues to reign supreme in the search engine market and appears to be increasing its lead. However, the search engine leader has a long way to go before it can seriously challenge the dominance of Yahoo or even Microsoft in the email and online content stakes.

A recent report has Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer stating that he doesn't expect any delay to the release of Windows Vista as a result of the recent lawsuit from security vendor Symantec. Well he would say that of course but the market obviously believes him because Microsoft's share price has hardly moved as a result of the lawsuit.

Microsoft and chipmaker AMD have announced an agreement to jointly support a pay as you go business model for PC usage in emerging markets similar to prepaid mobile phone plans. The agreement, which uses a business model called FlexGo, follows similar partnerships between Microsoft and Intel, Infineon, Lenovo, Phoenix and Transmeta.

A majority of internet users polled over the space of a week believe that Microsoft is not going to be a serious threat to Google in the search space. However, there are still many who believe Microsoft can seriously threaten the search leader's dominance, including Google itself.
