US control over Internet hotly disputed

ICANN names cybersecurity expert as new chief

Internet security expert Rod Beckstrom is has been named as the new CEO of ICANN to replace Australian Paul Twomey who steps down on 30 June. The appointment has been greeted with enthusiasm by leading figures in the Internet community.

The Internet Corportion for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is meeting in Sydney in late June and progressing its plan to allow almost any string of letters to be used for a global top level domain (gTLD), like .org or .net, will be high on its agenda.

Way to beat spam: attack the source not the symptoms

After years of fighting a losing battle against the growing deluge of spam swamping the net, security and law enforcement agencies finally struck their first blow of any consequence late last year when they managed to shut down the servers of a major spam hosting provider. Now authorities are looking for other ways to attack the root of the problem rather than just the symptoms.
